Local Area
Torrevieja is located on the south east coast of spain, about 30 miles south of Alicante and has a propulation of around 90,000. Torrevieja started out as a salt-mining and fishing village around 1805, and has built steadly in the years since. The city itself is located between two large salt lakes (Llacune Salada de la Mata and Llacunes de la Mata i Torrevieja), which give Torrevieja a healthy micro climate.
Guardamar del Segura is smaller than Torrevieja, but no less worth a visit. Guardamar is your typical Spanish town which not only has some of the best beaches in Spain, but also has a street market every Wednesday and some brilliant shops, restaurants and bars. With a population of around 14,000 people, Guardamar is much smaller than Torrevieja, but some may prefer the atmosphere of a smaller town, to the big town feeling of Torrevieja.
Alicante is one of Spains fastest growing cities, mainly due to the tourisim in the beaches on the Costa Blanca coast. Possibly the most notable feature of the city is its main castle, the "Castillo de Santa Barbara", which is located high above the city on a cliff. The most important festival in Alicante, the Bonfires of Saint John, takes place every year at summer solstice, and has been declared an event of international tourist interest.
